I can't believe that the school year is almost over, but the students are still working hard. Kindergarten students have started their insect research projects using PebbleGo and will work on them for the rest of the school year. First grade students are creating their very own fairy tale stories and typing them on Pixie. Second grade students are finishing up their research on their inventors using PebbleGo.
I want to take this opportunity and tell you what a pleasure it has been to teach your child/children technology this year; I have enjoyed myself and I loved being around your child/children. They have put a smile on my face and their hugs and high-fives have made me feel right at home. I hope they have a wonderful summer.

This week kindergarten students explored the world of insects using the PebbleGo website. In the next couple of weeks, they will be researching their own insect and creating a slide for their insect project. First grade students created a short fairy tale story and read it to their partner. Second grade students learned about how to recognize Cyberbullying.

This week kindergarten students took an imaginary trip to the beach. They created a beach scene and typed a sentence describing their beach. First and second grade students finished their research on their animals using the PebbleGo website. Week of April 17th

This week kindergarten students are learning about eight different species of sharks using PebbleGo. First grade students are learning about cyberbullying and what to do if they are being bullied. Lastly, second grade students are researching different types of animals using the PebbleGo site. |

This week kindergarten students learned about animals that live in the ocean. They created their own ocean scene using Pixie. First and second grade students learned about how to send emails, and what the similarities/differences are in emails and letters. Week of March 13th
This week's focus for kindergarten students was to create a weather forecast for the state of Illinois. First grade students learned about figurative language and created an illustration about their figurative language statement. Second grade students finished their landforms research packet. This week's focus continued to be the program Excel for kindergarten and first grade students; they are continuing to learn how to navigate through the program and fill in cells with the correct color and matching numbers. Second grade students are continuing to research information on landforms; students are researching definitions, characteristics, and real-life examples of their specific landforms. This week's focus for kindergarten and first grade students was Excel. The students have been creating different charts over the last few weeks. Kindergarten created a 100's chart and will continue working on them throughout next week. First grade students created a colored quilt that was similar to the quilts that the slaves created during the Underground Railroad to reach freedom. Second grade students learned how to use search engines to research information about landforms and they will continue their research over the next couple of weeks. |

This week kindergarten students learned about the different types of weather using PebbleGo. First grade students reviewed the definition of dialogue and used the program Pixie to create their own dialogue between two characters. Second grade students learned how to create slides using Power Point. Week of February 20th
This week's focus for students was Microsoft Excel. Students learned how to use their arrow keys to move around in each cell. Kindergarten students learned how to use their arrow keys to move around the cells and type in numbers, creating a table of local temperatures. First grade students typed numbers in a table ranging from 1-120. Second grade students learned how to type in a vocabulary word, its synonym, and type a sentence into a cell. |

This week students learned to create a Valentine using different grade-appropriate technology programs.

Kindergarten students will learn how to stay safe on the Internet by doing an interactive activity from netsmartzkids. First and second grade students will complete grade appropriate activities from Common Sense Media. This week's lessons will focus on what sites are safe sites to visit on the Internet for their age. First and second grade classes will wrap up their lesson by playing an Internet safety game bookmarked on only2clicks that addresses the content learned in the lesson.

This week kindergarten students will learn about polar animals in computers. As a class we will read an article on PebbleGo about various types of polar animals and their adaptations. Students will fill out a guided notes sheet listing each polar animal the article mentions. To wrap up class students will create a blank Pixie document and includes stickers of polar animals. First grade students will be randomly assigned an African American in history to research. Some of the people include inventors, athletes, civil rights leaders, musicians, and Barack Obama. Students will be provided with a note sheet to record information on the person they have been assigned to research. Second grade students will continue working on their product review from last week. Students will type their review in paragraph form in a Word document while including a photo of the item being reviewed. |
Week of January 9th
Welcome back! This week kindergarten students will read about winter weather in the PebbleGo database. In addition, students will create a picture in Pixie that illustrates a winter scene. First grade students will learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. Students will use the PebbleGo database to learn about the impact he had on our country in regards to civil rights. To finish up class, students will create their own "I have a Dream" speech that contains what they dream for in order to make the world a better place. Second grade students will learn how to write a product review. Students will choose one item received over winter break or in the past year and fill out a template that includes information necessary to compose a good product review. Students will view an example(s) from amazon.com and discuss how product reviews are used. Next week students will use their template to incorporate the content into paragraph format. |
Week of December 19th
With it being the last week before winter break, all students will be given a choice day in computers. Students will have the option of playing holiday games that I have bookmarked for them on only2clicks, previous games and activities we have done on only2clicks, educational games downloaded on the dock of our computer, or using programs such as Pixie and Microsoft Word.

Week of December 12th
All students in grades K-2 will be typing their letters to Santa Claus. We will be participating in the Macy's/Make a Wish "Believe" campaign in which Macy's donates $1 for each letter received to the Make a Wish Foundation. In addition, Macy's mails the letters to the North Pole for us. Students will come to computer class with handwritten letters that they will be typing in Microsoft Word so they can practice the skills that they have been learning in computer class. Students that are finished early may play holiday games that are bookmarked for them on Only2Clicks.

Kindergarten students will work in Pixie to create a page for a book titled, "Christmas Tree, Christmas Tree, What Do You See?" Each student will be given a different prompt to type and decorate the page for a book to be kept in their classroom. First grade students will be given a short poem about peppermint sticks. Students will be provided with written instructions for formatting the poem in Microsoft Word. Second grade students will choose from several Christmas books online to read. Students will read and listen to the books being read to them before writing a summary of the book in Microsoft Word. |

This week grades K-2 will all be working in Microsoft Word. Kindergarten students will be provided with an envelope of word cards that they need to form together to make sentences. Students will then type their formed sentences in Microsoft Word. First grade students will use Microsoft Word to write step by step directions on how to decorate a Christmas Tree. Students will be encouraged to use transition words to explain their process. Second grade students will be creating a Christmas Tree out of holiday words in Microsoft Word. Students will change the fonts, font sizes, and font colors to make the words form the shape of a tree. |

Week of November 14th
All grade levels will be working in Microsoft Word this week. Kindergarten students will be typing a sentence about what they are thankful for. Students will review how to change the font size and will learn how to change the color of the font. First grade students will be creating an acrostic poem in Word using the word, "Thanks". Students will review how to change the font size and will learn how to align text and bold text. Second grade students will learn how to insert images from a kid friendly search engine into a Word document. *Note: I was at home with my daugher whom was ill on Monday so Monday classes completed similar assignments in Pixie since they are much more familiar with that program. |
Week of November 7th
All K-2 students will be introduced to Microsoft Word this week. Kindergarten students will learn how to open Word, change the font size, and input information into the document. Students will type a list of word wall words that have been given to them. First grade students will create a recipe for friendship in Microsoft Word. Students will learn how to change the font size and add bullet points to text. Students will create a recipe for friendship including four different ingredients and measurements as well as instructions. Second grade students will compose a friendly letter in Microsoft Word. In their homeroom class, students are reading the book, "Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type". This story includes letters written to Farmer Brown from the animals. Students will write from the point of view of an animal and type a friendly letter to Farmer Brown. |
Week of October 31st
This week all grade level will do a computer activity related to the upcoming election. Students will learn about the voting process and role of the president while not including either candidate for this upcoming presidential election. Kindergarten students will learn about the voting process by taking a class vote on their favorite kind of pet. Students will then use the Pixie program to graph the results of the vote. First and second grade students will learn about the role of the President by reading an article and watching corresponding videos in PebbleGo. Students will then use Pixie to create a document, "If I were president I would....". I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how our first and second grade students would like to change our country. |
Week of October 24th
Kindergarten students will be introduced to the PebbleGo research database. This K-2 database provides information and videos on topics relevant to the common core in an easy to understand language and reading level. Students also have the option to listen to the content being read to them. Students will use the database to learn about various topics pertaining to fall. At the end of class, students will be given 10 minutes to do Halloween activities on pbskids.org. First grade students will read the online version of Pumpkin, Pumpkin. This story, located on Starfall, goes over the life cycle of a pumpkin. Once finished with the story, students will do various Halloween activities bookmarked on only2clicks. Second grade students will be finishing up and printing their habitat poster. Upon completion, students will have the rest of class to do various Halloween activities bookmarked on only2clicks. |
Week of October 17th
Kindergarten students will use the Pixie software to draw a pumpkin and carve it using the shapes and paint tools. Students will include a sentence about how their pumpkin looks at the bottom of the page. Students will focus on using a capital letter to start a sentence, one space between words, and a period at the end of the sentence. First grade students will use the PebbleGo database to learn about bats. Students will create a Pixie document including facts they learned about bats as well as drawings and stickers to illustrate the page. Second grade students will continue working on their habitats poster in Pixie. Students are inputting facts they learned about an assigned habitat to create an informational poster on that habitat. Students from all grade levels will be directed to www.kaluzny.weebly.com where I am sharing some exciting news for them! |

Kindergarten students will work in the creativity software, Pixie, and learn how to use the stickers feature of the program. Students will type their name at the top of the document by using the shift key to capitalize the first letter. Students will then type the title, "Fall", and locate stickers of things that remind them of fall. First grade students will use the PebbleGo database to learn about different ways that animals communicate. Once students have finished the reading, students will create a Pixie document stating and illustrating how one type of animal communicates. Second grade students will use the notes they have taken over the past three weeks to create a poster in Pixie about their assigned habitat. Students will learn how to save the document to a flash drive, as they will be working on the same project for the next few weeks. Students will include both text and pictures on their poster. |

Students will write information about the animal that they designed. Second grade students will continue researching an assigned habitat. Students will use PebbleGo, National Geographic for Kids, as well as the safe search school search engine to find information about the plants and animals in their assigned habitat. |

Students will access a variety of Internet based activities that helps them practice moving the mouse, scrolling, clicking, and dragging items using the mouse. First grade students will do a series of activities in Pixie related to this week's classroom lesson on neighborhoods. Activities include learning about community helpers and the difference between wants and needs. Second grade students will use the PebbleGo database to research an assigned habitat. Students will be provided with a guided notes handout to fill in about the habitat they are researching. This activity coincides with their habitat unit in science.

They will then work on their mouse skills by playing numerous mouse coordination games bookmarked for them on only2clicks. First grade students will create a document in Pixie, a creative software. They will include a sentence about their favorite thing about school while including and labeling an action verb in their sentence. Students will then be able to use the paint and stickers in the program to illustrate their sentence. Once complete, students will play an ice cream noun and verb game bookmarked on only2clicks. Second grade students will use the PebbleGo database to research a breed of dog. Students will then create a Pixie document that provides facts about the breed along with a stickers and pictures. This lesson relates to the story being read this week during their reading class.
